Welcome to the Chicken Spa
This is Harriet taking a dust bath. Chickens love taking dust baths to kill fleas and mites. They will locate a likely area and burrow into it, scratching with their claws and pecking the ground around them until they have a pile of fine dirt they can burrow into and fluff up into their feathers. This particular dust bath is located under our laurel hedge. Once a dust bath is created, it's not uncommon to see several hens at once rooting about, sometimes forcing each other out.
